Just seeing all the reports on teen suicide on the news through the year and hearing/seeing about bullying in school is terrible. Our words have so much power over each other, positive and negative. You can be a blessing if you choose, or you can be hurtful.

First of all, this is so true that it's scary.

Second of all --- this is totally unrelated --- I hate it when people call suicidal people weak. It's like a slap in the face. It makes me furious. As much as I know that they're simply uninformed, I can't help but stare in shock whenever someone brushes off suicide, or calls a suicidal person weak or fragile, or tells a bullied person to "get over it". If you break every bone in a person's body, then of COURSE they'll be weak.

Suicidal people aren't the weak ones, or the fragile ones, or the sensitive ones, or the ones who can't take it. No. THEY'RE the ones with the thick skin, the ones who take it all in stride, the ones who battle every day, and the ones who take the heat for everyone else. They're the survivors. When abandoned, they just fight alone. When beaten, they get back up and keep walking. Don't EVER say that a suicidal person has "given up". If they had given up, they would've already been gone YEARS ago. They put up with more than any human should. You see, living in their torment is like drowning 24/7... a drop of water does nothing, but an ocean? Different story. Nobody can hold their breath forever; the only difference is that the so-called 'strong' ones are actually on the beach. Yes, it's true that people drown. It takes years of being underwater, but those unable to escape on their own will eventually black out if unassisted. Instincts take over and shut things down. They would've hung on for years more, but there comes a point when it's beyond their control. Suicide is a strange thing... it's a placebo for oxygen that can't really be described. There comes a point when you become unconscious and just start gasping. But the opposite is true, however: people do escape. Maybe someone pulled them to the surface, maybe someone cut off their chains, maybe they were given CPR, and maybe some are given just a little more air. You'd be amazed... a single breath can keep someone alive for longer than you'd ever think possible.

And you'd be amazed at how little it takes to save a life.

Forgive me if I'm ranting, and please don't think this is aimed at anyone. I'm talking from my own experience, and this (thankfully) isn't about anyone on here. You guys all rock.

But whenever I see a story about a suicide or survivor, I can never see weakness. All I see is courage...

Oh, this is so true. These words had so much emotion in them that they could be a poem. I can't even describe how beautiful those words sound to me.

I actually DID make it a poem... sort of. I cleaned up the ranting and made it a bit longer. I liked how it came out, so I put it into my gallery a few months ago. I'm glad that my thoughts were able to do something to someone!

Tis' the truth my good Canadian lady.

And those with a naturally thick skin don't understand and tell the sensitive ones that they shouldn't be so sensitive...

As an observation; some people are mean-spirited, but others really can't grasp the concept of hurt because they don't feel it so they don't understand. I have genuinely good friends who blow it off if I get depressed, because they have never felt that and don't understand. Even though they don't mean to be insensitive.

It would help if compliments were more common ya? I find a couple honest, kind words can turn the day about.

That's very true, everyone's different and feels different so the challenge is really just working together and understanding each other... which as humans in our modern day society seems almost impossible..

Yes, a few kind words can mean the world to someone. :)

any society, any time actually. doesn't change that much.
I can't change the world. But I can put an arm around a friend. I can say "please" and "thankyou" to my waiter or waitress. Silly little details perhaps, but that's the way Christ said we should be.

So, I'm I the only one with "Man in the Mirror" by Micheal Jackson running through my head? lol

Yes, that's a good way to look at it. I would like to "change the world" even if it's just one person's world. :) You have some great points and things to say, I like your outlook on it all.

lol, kind words! Most of my outlook comes from what the good book says combined with what I have simply observed. It's an interesting world for sure, and I try to look at it as clearly as I can to see it as it really is.

Ah man... now I have to go listen to "Perfect world" by Huey Lewis and the news. I'm getting a constant stream of music out of this. lol

The truth really hurts, but bullying is never going to stop - it's a part of life, and as harsh as this sounds, all people need to do is learn how to get over it.

I agree, half the battle is people learning to cope and see themselves positively despite what other people think.

But that still doesn't excuse the bullies, it's not like their doing themselves any favors.

I really can understand the reasoning behind this. Bullying happens every day and only the rough stuff is the stuff that gets any real attention.

Just those two small images can really show the message underneath this picture. Great job. :)
